Pre-Season Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist

Pre-Season Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist

Spring is here, and it’s time to get your bike ready for an incredible riding season. At AAA Motorcycles, we understand that a well-maintained motorcycle is a safe and reliable one. Whether you're commuting, touring, or hitting the open roads, follow our essential pre-season checklist to keep your bike in top condition.

1. Change the Oil and Filter

Regular oil changes are vital for engine longevity. If your motorcycle has been parked over winter, the oil may have degraded, leading to reduced performance. A fresh oil change and new filter will ensure smooth running and protect your engine. While you're at it, inspect your bike for any wear or damage that might cause issues down the line.

2. Check Your Tyres

Your tyres are your only connection to the road, so their condition is crucial for safety and performance. Make sure to:

  • Check the tyre pressure – Underinflated tyres affect handling and can lead to dangerous blowouts.

  • Inspect for wear and damage – Look for cracks, flat spots, or dry rot. If the tread is worn, it’s time for a replacement.

3. Test Your Brakes

Your braking system is critical to your safety. Ensure your brake pads have plenty of life left and check your brake fluid. If the fluid appears dark or contaminated, a brake fluid change will improve stopping power. Remember, brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can affect braking performance.

4. Check Your Lights and Indicators

Good visibility is essential for safe riding. Test all lights, including your headlamp, brake light, and indicators, to ensure they’re working correctly. Replace any faulty bulbs before hitting the road.

5. Inspect the Driveline

Depending on your bike type, driveline maintenance varies:

  • Chain-driven bikes – Clean, lubricate, and adjust the chain for smooth performance.

  • Belt-driven bikes – Check for cracks, fraying, or excessive wear.

  • Shaft-driven bikes – Inspect the gear oil and top up or replace it if necessary.

6. Follow Your Bike’s Service Schedule

Every motorcycle manufacturer provides a maintenance schedule that includes oil changes, fluid replacements, valve adjustments, and other essential services. Keeping up with regular servicing ensures your bike runs efficiently and reliably throughout the season.
